Group Nature Sessions

What age groups are these sessions designed for?

We offer two “drop-off” style groups: Marvel, which meets for a 2 or 3 hour period and is designed for ages 2-10 and Flourish, which meets for a 3 hour period and is designed for ages 10-16. All ages are welcomed at either group. Choose your group based on the type of experience your chid would prefer.

Can parents attend or are the groups exclusively drop-off?

Both Marvel & Flourish groups are designed as drop-off programs for ages 3+. Ages 2 and under should attend with a caregiver. This is to support a quieter, more focused environment for kids to dive deeply into their play and to foster self-awareness when it comes to risk-taking and personal boundaries. Children 2 and under often require special care and are more comfortable being with a trusted adult. If your child aged 3+ is not ready to be dropped off, we recommend trying a Tinkergarten class instead or joining one of the wonderful homeschool meet-up groups in the area that include parents (email us if you need recommendations!) Exceptions will be made if older children have a special need to be with a guardian.

What is the cost to attend?

The fee for each group/ class is listed above the “Add To Cart” button the group’s information page. We offer a limited number of 50% or 100% off grants per season on a first-come-first-served, no-questions-asked basis, while funds last. If you need financial assistance, just ask!

Is there a sibling discount?

Yes! You will see an automatic discount reflected when you use the sibling dropdown during registration.

How often and for how long should my child attend?

We believe there is no such thing as too much time spent in nature and no better way to fill your child’s days than getting them outside in the natural world with others. If more than one session per week is offered and your schedule allows, we encourage you to sign your child up for both days (if not, one day of outdoor play per week is a beautiful addition to a child’s agenda). Moreover, nature never hurries, nor do blooming friendships, striving skill-seekers and developing minds. We see the most growth undergone and the most value received when children are able to attend for a full season, especially if meeting only once per week. We offer 1 month registration during the summer to accommodate changing schedules and to keep the outdoors accessible to all families – every little bit [of nature time] counts! Moreover, if you wish to register your child from the day they turn 2 and have them continue attending until they turn 16, we applaud you for making your child’s wellbeing a priority!

Do you offer half days?

You are welcome to pick up your child at any time. There are no half-day payment options available at this time.

Can we try it out before we commit?

We are not offering single-day visits at this time. The most value comes when children are able to discover new things in a familiar space week after week, form strong ties with peers and experience the various rituals of the group. We welcome you to join us for a month during the summer and watch your child flourish. You are welcomed to come meet some of our members and leaders at a community campfire & hike event during the warmer months. If you feel that more information would help you make an informed decision before signing up, please check out one of our social pages (linked in footer) or give us a call, text or email – we’d love to chat.

Are there restrooms?

There are no restrooms on site. However, we will have a pop-up shelter and portable toilet set up for use during the day. We encourage all students to use the restroom before arriving if possible.

Are snacks/lunch provided?

There is no full lunch provided, but we do provide a generous snack and, during the colder months, a warm drink. During the warmer months we work together to create a shared co-op style snack outdoors and during the colder months the leaders bring snack to share (usually something warm). You will be prompted to let us know about any allergies and food preferences when you register, which we will happily accommodate! You may also be asked to refrain from sending certain foods with your child if we have an allergy warning in the group. Otherwise, you are welcomed to send additional food with your child.

How is cleanliness handled for snack time?

Children work together to prep our co-op snacks. We wash hands using soap and water before using our hands to work with the food. On non-co-op days (in the Winter) we wash hands if needed and use serving utensils for the pre-prepared, homemade snack. It is not feasible to expect that food be 100% germ-free when kids are involved, but we do ask those who are actively sick to remain home as not to spread illnesses. Preparing, serving and sharing our food together is an important part of our community.

What kind of food is provided?

We do our best to respect a variety of eating styles and provide nourishing foods to support the vehicles that get us outside – our bodies! While not everything is organic, much of it is. We offer a variety of foods from week to week to please most palates and bring back up snacks such as apples and rice cakes for the times when our snack of the day is not a favourite for every child (or in the event someone needs something extra). We happily accommodate various diet preferences/allergy requests – just let us know when you register!

Do groups run year round?

Yes! Sign up by the season Fall-Spring or by the month during the Summer.

What happens in inclement weather?

Decisions about whether it is safe to hold a session are determined by our leaders using local weather guidance.

Leaders will update families at least 90 minutes prior to the session by email and/or text message.

Whenever possible, the canceled session will be rescheduled.

If the forecast changes toward potential inclement weather during a session, leaders will call caregivers as soon as the change is noted in order to have the children picked up.

Should inclement weather occur once the session has begun, children and leaders will take shelter in a building (if available) or use emergency shelter equipment. Our leaders will call 911 as a precaution & then immediately begin calling caregivers to come pick up their children (if they haven’t already done so).

What is your approach to safety?

Head-counts will be taken at regular intervals throughout the day and children will be asked to remain within relatively close proximity to the rest of the group. Leaders carry a cell phone, a first aid kit, a knife and pepper spray on their person in the event of an emergency. At least one leader at any given session is trained in CPR & Wilderness First Aid.

Your child will be free to explore/climb within reason. By practicing risk-assessment in a natural environment, children become more independent, confident and resilient. Children who engage in “risky play” on a regular basis are more aware of their own limits and subsequently get injured less frequently than those who are given excessive direction and limitations.

If children are taking physical risks, we check in to make sure that they feel sturdy, safe and confident in their risk-taking. Leaders give clear redirection if or when the child’s safety and/or the safety of friends in the group could be compromised. For example, we celebrate that sticks are the #1 toy of all time, but we make sure that our sticks have plenty of space so they do not touch our friends' bodies.

It is our goal to allow children to naturally learn their limits while supporting them in play that keeps them and their friends out of true harm.

What is the leader-to-child ratio?

We have two attentive leaders for a group of approximately 12 children or less.

What ages do these classes serve?

The program is designed for children ages 18 months-8 years.

Children younger and older than that age range are still welcomed to enroll. Siblings under 12 months are welcome to attend free of charge. Families are encouraged to try a free class to see if it is a good fit for their explorer(s).

What is the class size?

We enroll up to 15 explorers and their caregivers per class, plus the leaders own children.

Can siblings come for free?

Siblings under 12 months of age may join at no cost. Siblings over one year should enroll in the class, and a 25% sibling discount is automatically applied at checkout. After two siblings, any additional siblings may attend at no cost. Siblings older than 8 yrs may attend at no cost and are encouraged to take on a leadership role.

If a sibling (aged 1-8) needs to attend due to scheduling change (eg. day off at school), they can attend up to two sessions per season without enrolling. Families are asked to notify the teacher if an extra child needs to attend for a session so they can prepare any necessary materials.

Can we try it out before we commit?

Yes! We'd love to have you come visit us for a day. Please reach out to us via email to arrange your trial day. Trial days are offered once per family at no cost during the regular season’s classes.

Are refunds offered?

If a refund is requested BEFORE the season of classes begins, families can receive a full refund or credit towards a future class.

If a refund is requested AFTER the season of classes begins, families can receive a refund for half of the value of the remaining sessions in the season.

Are credits or refunds offered for missed sessions?

Credits and refunds not offered for classes missed by families. Families who subscribe can utilize their Tinkergarten Anywhere content if they miss a live class session.

If more than 2 sessions in one season need to be canceled by the leader without rescheduling, families are eligible for a refund for those canceled sessions.

What happens in inclement weather?

Decisions about whether it is safe to hold class are determined by the teacher using local weather guidance.

The teacher will update families at least 90 minutes prior to class by email and text message.

Whenever possible, the session will be rescheduled.

How do teachers foster a safe learning environment during class?

Each explorer (child) is accompanied by a guide (parent or caregiver). Teachers support guides and do all that they reasonably can to provide a learning environment that allows for safe risk-taking.

Leaders bring a First Aid Kit to class, which can be utilized by guides (attending adults) if needed.

A few, simple rules help to address most situations:

Explorers (children) can explore on their own as long as they can still see or hear their guide or the Leader.

If explorers are taking physical risks, we check in to make sure that they feel sturdy and safe in their risk-taking.

Leaders encourage children to engage in risky play, but give clear redirection if or when the child’s safety and/or the safety of friends in the class could be compromised. For example, we celebrate that sticks are the #1 toy of all time, but we make sure that our sticks have plenty of space so they do not touch our friends' bodies. Ultimately, over time, we want to help children learn their limits while still playing in a way that keeps them and their friends out of true harm.
